Metaphors for Life
Many traditions understand the power of teaching through stories. Our minds find a special repository for them. We unconsciously draw from this metaphorical resource bank when we need it most -- to guide and nourish us. Here you will find such tales, quotes and prose. As they have come to me, I pass them on to you just as our ancestors have done since the world was young.

What you need to know is this: before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we’ve learned as we’ve moved toward that dream.

- Paulo Coehlo from The Alchemist

GrowthWorks
Life is nothing if not levels of learning, whether we freely enter the Perpetual School or are drug kicking and screaming into our lessons. We actually have no choice in the matter. In this column, I offer you philosophy, musings and information that you may take with you as they fit into your own lyceum.

Weaving a Life

by Carla Woody and Sue Woody

Her loom graced a nook in their living room just as her garden brightened a corner of their yard during the years she was there. Things grew from her hands just as they did from her little plot of land.

Mama Luna spent about as much of her free time at the loom as she did in the garden. While she occasionally gave a belt to Preston or a colorful shawl to his mother, usually she wove lengths of cloth and put them away in a drawer in her room.

Once when she was busy at her handiwork, Preston had asked her, “Why do you weave so much, Mama? You don’t do anything with the things you make.”

“Oh Solocito!” she laughed and stroked his head. Then holding one end of the dangling threads waiting to be entwined, she’d fingered them thoughtfully. “These strings are like things we do. I weave the threads and I see how a life is made. I see my own life. Everyone has these threads. Mostly they don’t think about it!”

She motioned him to stand closer. “Look how if I would bring this color in here and wrap it around there, it changes the cloth. It’s not the same anymore. It could be good or bad. The cloth shows me how things will be.”

Review
More often than not, the books, films and music you will find here will not be new or "bestsellers," but those I consider classics. They are classics in the sense that I experienced an impact in reading them that positively flavored my own journey.

The Kin of Ata Are Waiting for You
Dorothy Bryant
ISBN 0-679-77843-8

This book is one, like Illusions by Richard Bach, which I’ve read several times over the years. Because I am different every time I read them, they never fail to point out yet another lesson or keep my attention riveted.

The main character in The Kin of Ata had led a seamy, notorious life. Spurred by a set of circumstances, he had a car accident, veered off a cliff and should have been dead. Instead, he was found and taken to a place where dreams of the night were valued for their messages and ideals common to true spiritual traditions were lived.

The contrast between who he was and where he now found himself was not only bewildering, but painful. Since we all bring with us what has brought us to a point, he attempted to make himself right and others wrong. But something happened along the way. He experienced an awakening.

That's all I'll say. The beauty is in the unfolding of the story - and the surprise that awaits will keep you glued until the utter end.
