Metaphors for Life
Many traditions understand the power of teaching through stories. Our minds find a special repository for them. We unconsciously draw from this metaphorical resource bank when we need it most -- to guide and nourish us. Here you will find such tales, quotes and prose. As they have come to me, I pass them on to you just as our ancestors have done since the world was young.

I would implore you, own your own broken heart when a relationship changes. The other way is a painful road.

GrowthWorks
Life is nothing if not levels of learning, whether we freely enter the Perpetual School or are drug kicking and screaming into our lessons. We actually have no choice in the matter. In this column, I offer you philosophy, musings and information that you may take with you as they fit into your own lyceum.

A Birthday Story

by Mary Lou Hyatt, Guest Columnist

Editor’s Note: This is a story sent to me by Mary Lou Hyatt, a valued member of our Kenosis community, who had a strong intuition about moving back to Texas from Arizona to care for her aged parents and followed it. While we certainly miss her here, I absolutely support those who follow what they know to be the true road. ~ Carla Woody

Sunday, on my birthday, I was out in the yard working, loading up some fertilizer to do a two-hour project in the back yard. I took the cell phone outside because I knew Haley (daughter in Arizona) would call. She did call and we talked a few minutes. She said she was getting ready for NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming class at Kenosis).

I said, "Do you have time to say hi to Gran (my mom)?" And she said, "Yeah, sure." Now she could have easily said, "Let me call her a little later." Or "let me finish getting ready and I will call back." And I would have put the phone down and gone back to my yard work for the rest of the morning. BUT because she said, "Sure" I stopped what I was doing and went in the house to give Mom the phone.

I found her lying down on her bed in the middle of an AFIB episode. I quickly told Haley that Mom was resting and I had to go. I got my stethoscope and Mom's heart was beating so fast that I couldn’t count it. I rushed her to ER and they hooked her up to a monitor and she came on the screen with a heart rate of 220. Before the doctor could even get in the room, she had climbed to 250.

The doctor leaned over Mom and said "I am about to give you a medication that will stop your heart and you are going to feel strange, but it won't hurt". He called the crash cart team in and they got the paddles ready and then stopped Mom's heart.

Our eyes were locked on each other the whole time. Her heart stopped as soon as they gave her Adenosine. About four seconds later, it started back on its own without having to use the paddles and it had a regular rhythm and rate of seventy. I was so relieved. The doctor said Mom could have tolerated that rhythm she had for no more than 30 minutes before she would have thrown a clot or had a fatal heart attack.

She was admitted to the hospital and today we are going to Methodist Hospital in Houston to do a procedure that will attempt to remove the cells that are misfiring at her AV node on her heart and if that doesn't work, they will go ahead and insert a pacemaker during the procedure.

So . . . I think if I had stayed in Arizona and not listened to the little tug to come home, I would have gotten a call on my birthday that would not have been good news. But if Haley hadn't called, I wouldn't have come in the house.

Morals of the story:

We always have just a minute to say "I love you."

In addition, it seemed the true message of this event came back to something very strong in your teachings about "intent." I think this incident with my mom made me realize that we must have "intent" in operation as we go about our business. We really don't need to get up and spend the day without making our intent clear so that the Universe can help us with it. That disconnect from intent or that "on purpose" behavior leaves us exposed.

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill
Judy Irving, Director
Available in DVD

Before I watched this documentary I thought it might be some potentially interesting piece on wild parrots in an urban setting. It’s that, but much more. The main human character, Mark Bittner was a man, lost and homeless, who began to feed the wild parrot flock around Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. Over time he was able to develop a relationship with the birds, cared for those who were injured or sick, bringing them into the small apartment where he was squatting until they were well, recognizing them separately to the extent of naming them. Through the lens of the camera, we’re able to experience their separate personalities. There’s Mingus, a cherry head, who loves to dance to the blues. And Connor, a blue crowned parrot in a flock of cherry heads, with his quiet, regal manner. Too many others to name here and I don’t want to give away too much.

At the heart of the story is the beauty that, through service, Mark came home to himself and found his place in the world. There may be a message for many of us in this poignant and inspiring film.
