Metaphors for Life
Carla Woody, Founder Metaphors for Life
Editor’s note: This story came to me through one of my clients after he experienced resolution and insight regarding an old internal conflict – the story being told to him at just the perfect moment.
GrowthWorks Lineage by Carla Woody At the end of October I held a group retreat, an opportunity to create a parenthesis, a safe space to cocoon away from the rest of our lives, in order to create clarity in intent and direction without the “busyness” rewarded by our culture that can feed distraction. The central theme I work with is intent, opening to that core resonance and clearing what would cloud it. In this way, alignment naturally occurs giving way to a wakeful, meaningful life. The particular pathway I offered the group this time had to do with lineage. In certain spiritual traditions, lineage is spoken to mean being descended from a Master, in that the Master initiates a disciple, who may remain a student or then become a guide who passes on the specific flavor of teachings, thereby perpetuating the line. In many ways similar, in our retreat, we worked with family lineage. I’ll share with you the introductory paragraphs of the process sheet I gave participants. There exists a collective unconscious, a field of information, in your family line, what is passed down in underlying knowledge, experience and expression through generations. History/Herstory. Her story. His story. Your story. Now is an opportunity to bring to consciousness what was unconscious. To witness, inquire, reflect. To choose what is yours – the beat of your own heart and what of your lineage aligns to it. Marking out space as a timeline, we have those who came before us, our ancestors, and those who come from us, our descendants. For those who have no biological offspring, per se, we all still leave our fingerprint on others in varying degrees creating a rippling effect wider than we might imagine. Just by virtue of metaphorically witnessing the vast stretch of human lives throughout time can give a whole new meaning to your own personal choices in the present and what you can and do affect. After being a witness to their lineage, I invited them to walk beside their timeline noting their own responses and, when their body was drawn, to step onto the timeline and into the body/subtle energy field of that ancestor. I encouraged them to do so even when it didn’t make logical sense, the ancestor not being someone known or even directly in their line. Having become the ancestor, what intelligence is communicated there through posture, sensation or energy stirrings? What is the patterning? Is there a gift? Usually the draw has to do with a vibratory resonance. Something within us that has found a match in some way. So the discovery of the origins of a talent perhaps that can be enlarged upon through this sort of inquiry. Or maybe the realization of a detrimental pattern, having skipped a generation or two, but inherited in the present through the past. What are the stories that have been passed down through the family field of invisible information? These awarenesses are but seeds. From this place, we can allow the answers to these questions to emerge and the means of getting there to present themselves. - What are the gifts with which you’ve been blessed that you wish to pass on? - What are any dreams that you’ve taken on that aren’t yours to live? - What are any dreams that you’ve taken on that aren’t yours to live? - What are any pains to be healed that are not yours to be borne? As the reader, you might wonder how anything could come of this exercise. But then there’s something in play during such times – in the parenthesis of a retreat - when we are asked to take off the overcoat of our everyday selves so that an inner intelligence has a chance to take the lead. And how wonderful when we allow it to integrate into our day-to-day thoughts and actions! The line of inquiry I offered the group was an energetic one originating from their own body and its resident field – not any analysis by the mind. (If the everyday mind takes lead in this process, the explorer will likely be hindered or stalled.) Although, insight, as a by product, will be channeled to the mind. Whether it turns into conscious awareness or not isn’t really important from my standpoint. For those who are used to intellectual investigation, this pathway can be especially frustrating because they may not know what created the shift. But in the end is that really important? Or is it more meaningful that life – after such a level of work – evolves to have a sweet clarity and quiet joy about it? Author’s note: This process is partly inspired by Virginia Satir’s and Bert Hellinger’s important work in family systems and NLP. Further produced from inquiry into my own lineage and continuing exploration into the ways of energy. © 2006 Carla Woody. All rights reserved. The Secret
The Secret was lent to me by an acquaintance who, having received much inspiration from it, wanted to share it with others. I applaud the producers for providing such a product for mainstream consumption so that, indeed, this information can be more widely distributed. When What the Bleep Do I Know came out, I included its viewing as an assignment for my Navigating Your Lifepath program because it explains the brain science and quantum physics behind why the program works so well for those who commit to it. I’ll add The Secret as an assignment on the next go round, specifically due to its explanation of Universal Laws in addition to what What the Bleep discusses. Plus the fact that it tells the viewer to do a number of the things I’ve already included in the Lifepath program in a step-by-step fashion in order to make the leap. I tell folks repeatedly that there’s a method to my madness – and it’s quite useful to have outside back-up reinforcing it! Essentially, The Secret is about the Law of Attraction. The producers break it down into three steps: 1) ask, 2) believe and 3) receive. For those of you who have worked with me this translates to: 1) intent, 2) expectancy and 3) sacred reciprocity, through which we work with beliefs and maintaining balance. The Secret gives a number of instances through historical figures and present-day people as to how the principles work. At first I was a little dismayed because they seemed focused on attaining material things, e.g. a new car or piece of jewelry, perhaps to secure the attention of the mainstream culture. But I was heartened when, later in the film, they turned to identifying underlying values, purpose and gratitude, tying everything to energy as the creative force. They do present a broad brushstroke around limiting beliefs and what stops people from getting what they want. However, it’s likely to be frustrating to those who accomplish step one (asking) quite well, but are mightily challenged to get beyond step two (believing) with much success. So while this film is quite inspirational, can instill hope, and offer some guidelines, it also leaves the viewer to find interventions of their own if they’re having problems getting all the way through step 3 (receiving). It was my acquaintance who said that this is only a first in what could be a complete line of movies, the second – he said - being what to do once you get “it” and dealing with the fear of actually having or losing it, looping back to beliefs, of course. Or then there’s getting what you ask for and discovering it’s not what you want at all! By the way, if you have people frequently telling you that they want your life, then you probably already know and practice the secret. You don’t need to see the film except perhaps for validation.
